HOLY SPIRIT TO CONCLUDE 150th ANNIVERSARY & YEAR OF FAITH WITH CONCERT & MASS
The Church of the Holy Spirit will conclude a year-long observance of its 150th Anniversary this Friday night,November 22, with a music concert, followed by the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
Beginning at 7 o’clock, the Anniversary Choir, consisting of parish musicians old and new, will offer a selection of traditional and contemporary songs. Following the concert, they will lead song at a special Mass on the Feast of St. Cecilia, patron of music. Father Loras Grell, Pastor, will be the main celebrant.
With the season of Advent just a week away, the Mass will also conclude both the Year of Faith and the Liturgical Year, Cycle C.
There will be a reception with cake and punch in the church commons after Mass. The community is invited to attend. There is no charge.
---------------------------------------------

This year marked a major milestone for the parish as it celebrated 150 years of continuous presence of the Catholic faith in the Plattsmouth community.
The parish officially commemorated the occasion on Sunday, May 26, with an afternoon celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The Most Reverend James D. Conley, Bishop of Lincoln, was the main celebrant. A number of priests from the diocese, including then pastor Father Thomas Au and his associate Fr. Dhanam Marneni, helped concelebrate. Fr. Thomas Smith, CSC, a native of Plattsmouth, and currently serving as pastor of Holy Cross Parish Dandora in Nairobi, Kenya, was the guest homilist.
A Plattsmouth mayoral proclamation was presented at the Mass by the Honorable Michael Bowman. A special song, “Journey of Faith”, written by Terry Little, was offered by the choir. A social and dinner followed in the parish hall / school gymnasium.
Plans for the celebration have been ongoing the past eighteen months. Committees were formed to look at and solicit inputs from all facets of parish life. Coordinators included Terry Little and Barb Toman, celebration; Stacey Case and Judy Roby, census and survey; Jim Ulrich, church and facility; Pat Carroll and Mary Lou Salazar, faith development; Bonnie Seyfer and Joy Scanlan, history; and Little, publicity.
The theme “A Journey of Faith - Together in the Spirit” was selected by the combined anniversary committee.
Holy Spirit Parish was formed in 1972 from two former parishes, St. John the Baptist and Holy Rosary. St. John, the second oldest parish in the diocese, was established 150 years ago this fall. The first church was consecrated in June 1863. Holy Rosary Church was dedicated in 1891.
Plattsmouth’s decline in population, coupled with a shortage of priests, influenced the decision to merge the two parishes. The two original parishes exist now only in memory, but their traditions of generosity of time, talent and treasure go on in a new setting.
Its history is rich with spiritual and charitable works, tradition and activities; but just as importantly, it is rich with people through the years who have been so dedicated to the love of God and neighbor and continuing God’s work.
Grateful to the clergy, religious and parishioners past and present who developed and maintained the spiritual life of the faith community, and with the Holy Spirit as its guide, the Church of the Holy Spirit is making history each day as it continues its journey of faith.
